How Whispurr works
Whispurr keeps your conversations, plans and shared records with the people you choose. Everything is stored on your devices and synced directly between them. These guides explain the main ideas and show how to use each part of the app.
How the pieces fit
Four ideas hold the app together. Each one sits inside the next.
- Device
- One installation of Whispurr on an iPhone, iPad or Mac. Its settings, such as which transports to use, apply only to that installation.
- Account
- Holds your personas and chats. One is created the first time you open the app, protected by a 24-word recovery phrase. Link your other devices to use the same account everywhere.
- Persona
- The name and picture you share in chats. Make one for each part of your life. Chats, contacts and Vault items never cross between personas.
- Chat
- A conversation and everything shared in it: messages, media, events, plans, activities and places. Every member keeps a copy on their own devices.
Finding your way around
The app is a stack of pages that mirrors the diagram. Use the back button at the top left to go up a level.
- Device home lists the accounts on this device. The gear opens Device Settings.
- Account page lists your personas. The gear opens Account Settings, with your recovery phrase, linked devices and backup.
- Persona page has four tabs: Chats, Contacts, Activities and Vault. The gear opens Persona Settings.
- Chat shows the conversation. Tap the chat's name at the top to open its sections, such as Members, Photos, Calendar and Map. The gear opens Chat Settings.
Every device, account, persona and chat has a four-word code, such as amber-oak-key-fox. Codes appear at the top of each page and in its settings. They're an easy way to tell things apart, for example when you check that two devices are linking to the same account.
Where your data lives
Whispurr has no central server holding your chats. A chat's messages and media are encrypted and stored on the devices of the people in it, and on the other devices linked to their accounts. When two devices can reach each other, over the internet or nearby, they exchange what's new.
- Your devices. Every device linked to your account keeps a full copy of your personas and chats.
- Other members. Everyone in a chat keeps a copy of that chat, and only that chat.
- Backup devices. A Mac linked to your account can keep a backup copy, so you can restore your account with your recovery phrase.
- Offline delivery. If you turn it on for a chat, Courier holds that chat's encrypted updates for members who are offline. It can't read them. See How it connects.
