Guide
Media
Photos, videos, voice clips, songs, files and links. Everything you share is encrypted and stored only on the devices of the people in the chat.
Photos and videos
- In a chat, tap + › Photos (on a Mac, Photos and Videos…). Whispurr sees only the items you pick, not your whole library.
- Picked items wait above the message field. Tap one to review it, or remove it.
- Type a caption if you like, then tap Send.
Several photos in one message appear as a stack. You can send up to 10 attachments per message.
Good to know
- Photos are re-encoded before sending (up to 2048 pixels on the long side), which removes their metadata, including where they were taken.
- Photo locations are off by default. Turn on Device Settings › Include photo locations to keep a rounded location (about 11 m) so photos appear on the chat's map. Photos taken inside a privacy zone never include one.
- Videos are converted to 720p with metadata removed, and must be 32 MB or less afterwards.
- Files of any kind can be sent with + › File, up to 32 MB each.
Camera
The iPhone camera is built for capturing a moment in several shots. It stays open after each shot, and every photo or video lands in a strip at the bottom.
- Tap + › Camera, or swipe up on +.
- Tap the shutter for a photo. Touch and hold it to record a video (up to 60 seconds), or switch to Video in the strip. The volume buttons work as a shutter too.
- Tap a shot in the strip to review it, and Discard any you don't want.
- Tap the check mark to attach your shots to the message, then send it.
- Focus and zoom: tap to focus, pinch to zoom, double-tap to switch cameras, and touch and hold to lock focus and exposure.
- Flash: off, auto or on. The front camera lights the screen instead.
- Stitch (experimental): with two or more overlapping photos, Stitch joins them into a panorama.
Shots you don't attach are deleted when the camera closes. The camera is available on iPhone and iPad; on a Mac, use Photos and Videos….
Voice clips
When the message field is empty, the Send button becomes a waveform. Tap it to record a voice clip of up to 10 minutes.
- Tap the waveform to start, and stop when you're done.
- Play it back, delete it, or send it as it is.
- To tidy it up first, tap the waveform to open Review Recording. You can trim the start and end with the yellow handles, and apply filters.
| Filter | What it does |
|---|---|
| Rumble cut | Removes wind, handling and hum below 80 Hz. |
| Clear voice | Gentle compression, presence and de-essing. |
| Trim silence | Cuts dead air and shortens long pauses. |
| Normalize | Evens out the volume with a safe peak limit. |
Filters run on your device. Compare Original and Filtered before you send. Recipients can play clips at 1×, 1.5× or 2× speed.
Songs
Any audio file you send with + › File, such as an MP3 or M4A, plays as a song. Whispurr reads its title, artist, album and artwork on your device and shows them on a player card. Songs appear in the chat's Audio tab alongside voice clips. The 32 MB file limit applies.
Links
When you paste a link that starts with https:// or http://, your device loads the page once and attaches a preview (title, site and an image) to your message. The people you're chatting with get the preview inside the message, so their devices never contact the site.
- Remove a preview before sending by tapping the X on it.
- Turn previews off for this device with Device Settings › Generate link previews.
- Links shared with a preview are collected in the chat's Links tab.
Sharing from other apps
On iPhone, you can send photos and videos to a chat from the system share sheet.
- In Photos or another app, tap Share and choose Whispurr.
- Pick a chat (grouped by persona), add a caption if you like, and tap Queue.
- Open Whispurr. Queued items are sent then, and a banner shows their progress.
You can share up to 10 items at a time. Queued items are encrypted while they wait.
Media viewer
Tap any photo or video to open it full screen. The viewer pages through the other photos and videos in the same message. From the map, it pages through every photo with a location.
- Swipe to move between items. Pinch or double-tap to zoom. Drag down to close.
- Videos have a position bar. Controls hide while a video plays; tap to show them.
- Share saves or sends an item through the system share sheet.
- On a Mac, use the arrow keys to move between items and Esc to close.
To delete media, touch and hold its message in the chat and choose Delete.
