Guide
Places
Share a place, record a route, and see everything with a location on the chat's map. Whispurr never shares your live location, and your privacy zones keep the places you care about out of shared routes and photos.
Sharing a location
A shared location is a single place, either a pin or a search result. It isn't live: it doesn't follow you once it's sent.
- In a chat, tap + › Location.
- Search for a place or address, use Use Current Location, or move the pin on the map.
- Tap Add, then send.
Tap a shared place to see how accurate it is, Open in Maps or Copy Coordinates. Events and plans can have a place too, set in their Location section.
If a pin falls inside one of your privacy zones, Whispurr warns you, but it's still shared if you send it. Searches for places go to Apple Maps.
Routes
On iPhone, you can record a walk, run or ride as a route and save it to an event in the chat. When several people record the same outing, each adds their own route to the event, and they appear together on the map.
Share it to the chat. Bob’s route joins Alice’s on the chat’s map. The stretch near his home never leaves his phone.
Record a route
- In a chat, tap + › Route. Allow location access while using the app, with Precise Location on.
- Tap Start. Nothing is recorded before this.
- Use Pause and Resume as you go. Recording pauses itself when you stop moving and resumes when you set off again.
- To use your phone for something else, minimise the recorder. Recording continues, iOS shows its location indicator, and the Lock Screen shows your distance and time.
- Tap Finish, then choose how to save it.
- New Event creates an event with your route, titled and timed from the recording.
- Add to a Group Event adds your route as your own entry on an event someone else created around the same time.
If the app is interrupted, the unfinished recording reopens paused. Discard deletes a recording without sharing it.
After saving
Open a route to see its distance, moving and elapsed time, elevation gain and a speed profile. You can Export GPX, or Edit to trim its start and end. Only the person who recorded a route can trim it, and trimming applies your privacy zones again.
Privacy zones
A privacy zone is a circle around a place you want to keep private, such as home or work. Before a route leaves your phone, every point inside a zone is removed, and no line is drawn through it. Distance, times and the preview image are calculated only from what remains.
- Open Account Settings › Privacy Zones and tap Add Privacy Zone.
- Give it a name, then move the map so the circle covers the place, or tap Use Current Location.
- Set the Radius, from 100 m to 2 km, and tap Save.
Larger circles hide more of where a route starts and ends. Zones are stored in your encrypted account and sync only to your own devices. Photos taken inside a zone never include a location, even with photo locations on.
A gap in a shared route can still show that you paused somewhere nearby. For a home zone, a radius large enough to cover several streets works best.
The chat map
Open a chat's sections and choose Map to see everything in the chat with a location: shared places, photos with a location, events with a place, and routes.
- Use the Locations, Photos, Events and Routes chips to show or hide each kind.
- Map Style switches between map, satellite and hybrid.
- Nearby items group together; tap a group to zoom in. Tap an item to open it.
Maps and privacy
Maps are drawn by Apple Maps. To draw one, your device asks Apple for the map of the area on screen; it never sends your route. If you'd rather make no map requests at all, turn off Device Settings › Show map under routes. Routes and places then show without a map underneath, and the Map tab becomes a list.
